Certificates of Occupancy

Principles from the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code

1.
Before a structure can be occupied, a certificate of occupancy shall be obtained, indicating that the work is finished and the necessary inspection approvals are completed, and that the structure complies with any associated laws and ordinances.

2.
A temporary certificate of occupancy can be requested by the permit holder before the work is completed. The building official may issue the temporary certificate if the structure can be occupied safely.

3.
A certificate of occupancy can be issued for an existing structure upon written request from the owner.
