Commonwealth's Attorney

The Commonwealth's Attorney is elected to a four-year term and is an active partner with local and state law enforcement agencies. The Commonwealth’s Attorney prosecutes felony cases, which include murder, rape, robbery and other serious crimes. In Highland, in addition to all felony cases, we also prosecute all class 1 misdemeanor cases with the discretion to prosecute class 2 and 3 misdemeanors.

The Highland County Commonwealth’s position is part-time and the office has one part-time secretary.

Megan Yelen is the current Commonwealth’s Attorney, whose term began on January 1st, 2024.
 

Purpose
The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney will work hand in hand with law enforcement to properly prosecute crimes against our citizens and to protect the community of Highland County. I will continually strive to develop and implement practices aimed at protecting the community, advocating for victims, and seeking timely sanctions for those who choose to violate our laws.
